So today I got the Chromebooks and to see what would happen. The first few classes (3, 4, and 5) didn't go so well. The Chromebooks didn't charge, and I didn't have passwords and login info as ready as I would have liked. Lesson learned. by 6th grade, I had it figured out and we got a lot done. 6th graders logged in, sent me and email, sent and email to a friend and contributed to a shared document. During lunch I tried to get the books charged up so I was ready to go. It turns out that the storage cart (which also serves to charge the devices) had some issues, so very few books got a charge. I was more prepared for that so it didn't really hold us back. For the next two classes (1st and K) I logged the kids in with their class login. For these two grade levels, I had the kids in partners. I showed them how to open up the browser, create a drawing, add shapes and save it with there name. Finally the 2nd graders arrived. I decided that they would each have their own device and login with their class info on there own. That took a bit more thine than I would have liked, but they pretty much got it. We spent the remaining few min. creating a drawing and saving it with their name.
In the end I am happy to say that very few kids struggled with the track pad. Most are comfortable tying their name, and most seemed pretty comfortable on the chrome books. So all in all, I'm pretty excited about what were going to be able to do!!! For suggestions about getting started and some simple intro activities check out the getting started page.
